On Fox News Sunday, Speaker Ryan Gives Seniors Reason to be Extremely Worried About TrumpCare

On Fox News Sunday, Speaker Ryan was asked about the burdensome premiums that older Americans would pay under the Republicans’ TrumpCare bill, and gave misleading information about the bill’s tax credits:

Ryan: “A person in their 50s or 60s does have additional health care costs than say a person in their 20s or 30s. The tax credit adjusts for that.”

That’s not true. TrumpCare would implement an ‘Age Tax’ which would significantly increase the cost of premiums for seniors. Speaker Ryan went on to say that Republicans are working to address high costs for seniors in their bill – which, if true, is news to… everyone:

Ryan: “But you’re right in saying – and we agree – we believe we should have even more assistance. And that’s one of the things we’re looking at for that person in their 50s or 60s, because they experience higher health care costs.”

Wallace: “So you’re going to change the plan as it was written and the CBO analyzed it?”

Ryan: “That is among the things we’re looking at doing, yes.”

That’s interesting, because the only changes we’ve seen proposed to TrumpCare would cut Medicaid even further, making costs for seniors even higher, and kicking even more off their health care.

With TrumpCare, older Americans would be forced to pay premiums five times higher than what others pay for health coverage.  A 64-year-old with an income of $26,500 in the individual market will pay $12,900 more in their premiums each year.

TrumpCare would also shorten the life of the Medicare Trust Fund by 3 years, and steal $880 billion from Medicaid.  Republicans are cynically pushing Medicare toward insolvency, and ransacking the Medicaid coverage that seniors depend on to pay for their long-term care needs.

Speaker Ryan, forgive us, but we’re just not buying what you’re trying to sell.
