Pelosi Announces Jim McGovern as Ranking Member of Rules Committee

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that the House Democratic Caucus has approved her nomination of Congressman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts to serve as Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee.

“The Congress and the country suffered an immense loss with the passing of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, who made history as the first woman to ever chair the powerful Rules Committee,” said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  “It is fitting that the mantle of leadership will now be taken up by Congressman Jim McGovern, a proud progressive champion who has dedicated a lifetime to defending working families across the nation.”

“Congressman Jim McGovern is a deeply trusted voice and a strong, strategic leader in the Congress,” continued Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  “Jim has long been a steadfast advocate for the human rights of people throughout the world, and his leadership of the Human Rights Commission has greatly advanced the cause of social justice and freedom for so many vulnerable men, women and children.  He has also distinguished himself as a champion for rural and working families, and for his defense of the vital lifeline of SNAP that has helped lift up millions of Americans who struggle with hunger.”

“Congressman McGovern’s great integrity and legislative expertise will be invaluable at the head of the Rules Committee to fight for better futures for the American people,” said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. “We are confident he will bring energy, determination and passion to this vital position, as he builds on the remarkable legacy of Congresswoman Slaughter.”
