Pelosi Statement on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement marking International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia:
“Both in the U.S. and around the world, LGBTQ individuals continue to endure despicable violence, bigotry and persecution. On International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia we affirm that no person should live in fear or suffer discrimination because of who they are or whom they love.
“Through decades of tireless advocacy and activism, we have made extraordinary progress toward realizing the promise of equality and justice for all LGBTQ Americans. Yet, the Trump Administration has continuously failed to protect these achievements, abandoning transgender students, refusing to enforce anti-discrimination protections and keeping LGBTQ Americans invisible in the Census. Meanwhile, the Administration has rejected America’s responsibility to be a moral leader around the world by failing to speak out against the horrors facing LGBTQ communities across the globe.
“We must never relent in our determination to defend and advance the rights of all LGBTQ people. In Congress, Democrats continue to press for the Equality Act, to remove all doubt that sexual orientation and gender identity belong in the protections of the Civil Rights Act that guards our democracy. We know that diversity, respect and equality form the bedrock of our duty to build a more perfect union. Today, and every day, we commit to fighting for the rights of all people and to speaking out against homophobia, transphobia, bigotry and hate wherever it is found.”
