Pelosi Statement on Two Years Since Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub Shooting
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement to mark two years since the attack at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, which occurred on June 12, 2016:
“This year, as the world celebrates LGBTQ Pride Month, we take time to reflect on the heartbreaking, hateful attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida that took the lives of 49 beautiful souls two years ago. As we mark this tragic day, we continue to mourn for the victims and send our prayers and support to the survivors and families still coming to terms with their grief. And together, we reaffirm beyond all doubt that hatred will never defeat pride.
“Since that painful day, families in countless communities across the country have suffered the tragedy of gun violence. Yet, Republicans in Congress continue to prioritize their allegiance to the NRA above the survival of innocent Americans, and have fought tooth and nail against commonsense gun violence prevention measures. The senselessness and cruelty of their cynical refusal to act is compounded by the Republicans’ adherence to a discriminatory, hateful agenda and their relentless attacks against the transgender community.
“The Republicans’ inaction on vital gun violence prevention measures and refusal to protect the rights of all Americans dishonors the memories of those we have lost, and undermines our sacred American values of life, liberty and the freedom to pursue happiness. On this somber occasion, let us move forward with strength and purpose to ensure no other family is forced to endure the anguish of gun violence or suffer the pain of hatred and persecution. Democrats will never relent in our fight to protect our communities while we work to build a brighter, more just and equal future for all Americans.”
