Pelosi Statement on the 6th Anniversary of DACA

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement to mark the sixth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, established by President Obama on June 15, 2012:

“Six years ago, President Obama honored our proud history as a nation of immigrants when he protected our bright young DREAMers by establishing the DACA initiative.  These brave, hard-working young men and women have brought their talents, passions and faith in the American Dream to our country, and their courage and patriotism have made America more American.

“Yet, these inspiring young DREAMers and their families continue to live in constant fear and uncertainty of the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans’ hateful, discriminatory, anti-immigrant agenda that terrorizes communities, condemns vulnerable women and children and tears families apart.  Yesterday, House Republicans doubled down on their cruelty by releasing a heartless bill that codifies the President’s anti-immigrant agenda, and fails to end the President’s barbaric policy of separating parents from their children at the border.  Instead of listening to the will of the American people who overwhelmingly support DREAMers, the GOP is using these hard-working students, teachers, servicemembers and entrepreneurs as partisan political pawns in their reprehensible attack on our nation’s values.

“DACA and the exceptional young Americans who have benefited from its protections have enriched our nation and brought us closer to fulfilling our nation’s creed – E Pluribus Unum.  Democrats will never forget that our strength lies in our diversity, and we will continue to stand up against the Republicans’ relentless, shameful assault on our immigrant heritage.  We are committed to ensuring that America remains a beacon of hope, opportunity and freedom for all.”
