Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Jim Graham
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of former D.C. Councilman Jim Graham:
“Jim Graham was a trailblazing champion for LGBT equality and a towering hero in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic, Jim’s determined leadership of the Whitman-Walker Clinic provided a beacon of compassion, healing and hope. With his boundless energy and strength, Jim boldly confronted the stigma facing those with HIV and drove vital progress in treatment and support.
“For decades, Jim worked on the front lines of the fight for dignity and equality for LGBT Americans. As the second-ever openly gay man elected to the D.C. City Council, Jim was a groundbreaking public figure who helped open the door for a generation of LGBT leaders. He was a tireless advocate for his constituents and a powerful force for dismantling discrimination.
“It was my great privilege to work with Jim in the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and to witness his passion, resourcefulness and leadership firsthand. We have lost a beloved friend and a true champion too soon. May it bring comfort to Jim’s loved ones that so many share in their sorrow at the passing of this great man.”
