Pelosi Remarks at Moms Clean Air Force Play-In for Climate Action Press Conference
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined House and Senate Democrats and environmental leaders to call for action on climate change and to highlight the risk the Trump Administration poses to the well-being of America’s children. Below are the Leader’s remarks:
Leader Pelosi. Thank you very much Vanessa [Huac]. Thank you all for being here. What an honor it is to be with Moms Clean Air Force Play-In. Let me just thank you all for the work that you have done.
Right away, just the thought that you were coming, Scott Pruitt headed for the hills. He headed for the hills. He left because of his corruption, but what’s more important that we have to fight is the pollution that this Administration is pouring into the air.
Profits for the polluters at the expense of our children’s health. Now, I’m part of the Stroller Brigade way back when. I had five children, nine grandchildren. Now the thing that motivated me to be involved in the political scene is that you can do many things for your children, but you cannot have clean air, clean water, unless you have responsible public policy.
And responsible public policy in this regard is about public health. Again clean air, clean water. Essential to that is environmental justice. That this clean air and – clean air and clean water are in all – are in every community in our country.
So thank you for the fight that you are making. It is just, the voices of moms and dads, parents in this, is a priceless voice. It is a voice that will go against their green wave of money. Their green wave of money.
So, when this is a policy that we want to go forward, it’s public health, clean air and clean water. Public lands for our children. It’s all very, very connected.
Later today, Moms Clean Air Force will be testifying at a committee event that we will be having at the Capitol. I thank all of you for your strong message that you have out there.
Again, as a mom and a grandma, as a parent, this is something that is destroying our planet. More importantly and more immediately, destroying the health of our children.
When Pope Francis was here and he talked about climate change and the rest of that. He used the term, we must stop air pollution. That was the framing message because he knew that all the things he wanted to accomplish to save the planet meant more to people in terms of the life and health and well-being of their children.
Many kids have a pre-existing medical condition because of the pollution in the air. Many conditions are aggravated, whether it’s asthma or the rest, by pollution in the air.
So, I only have ten seconds left and I want to use it to thank you. Thank you because you making a tremendous difference.
Moms, know your power. Know your power to make the change in public policy that makes the difference in the health and well-being of our children. For many of us, it is our primary issue.
I’ll tell you this one anecdote. Many years ago, when I first ran for Congress, this young African American, young woman, 20 years old, she came to be a volunteer. She said, ‘I’m showing up because I just found out that politics has something to do with the air I breathe and the water I drink, so I guess I’ll always have to pay attention to politics and government. At least as long as I breathe air and drink water.’
So thank you all for making this planet healthier with all that you do. And you will succeed! Your voices are strong. Know your power. You will succeed.
Thank you all for the opportunity to share some thoughts. I yield back now to Vanessa and thank Vanessa for her wonderful work here today.
