Pelosi Remarks at Roundtable Discussion on the Puerto Rican Economy
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) and a panel of experts and other Members of Congress for a roundtable discussion on economic growth in Puerto Rico.
Leader Pelosi. Thank you very much. Thank you so much and I appreciate what Chairwoman [Nydia] Velazquez, Ranking Member now, what she has done as a Ranking Member of the Small Business Committee. She has been a champion and commands a great deal of respect for her knowledge of the economy, economic growth, and the rest.
Her commitment to Puerto Rico, as you know, is a very high priority for her. She has made it a high priority for the rest of us.
I really came to listen. I want to thank you for your leadership. I appreciate the bipartisan panel you have up here to listen to the experts on the other side there.
The PROMESA [Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act] was something very courageously that Congresswoman [Nydia] Velazquez supported. As you know, no bill that passes Congress is perfect and does not have its objections. She was very courageous and led the way, the path forward, and the clear path forward we hope to see for Puerto Rico. We want to learn from you about that.
Of course I have been to Puerto Rico I don’t know how many times: as a student, on my honeymoon, my five-year anniversary and the rest. So it is near and dear to my heart, in addition to being such a valued part of our country.
