The Hill: Pelosi blasts Trump’s transgender order: ‘Hatred will never defeat pride’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday slammed President Trump’s call to ban all transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military and vowed to fight the president’s proposal.

“69 years ago, President Truman desegregated the US Military. This morning, @POTUS turned anti-#trans prejudice into policy,” Pelosi wrote on Twitter.

“.@realDonaldTrump’s decision to ban transgender Americans from the military is a vile attack on brave individuals defending our country.”

Pelosi said it is “disgusting” to see members of the LGBT community “devalued for a hateful political agenda.”

The House Democratic leader’s comments follow Trump’s Wednesday morning announcement that he has decided to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military after consulting with his generals.

His declaration constitutes a major shift in military policy and comes a year after the Obama administration lifted the ban on letting transgender individuals openly serve.

“Transgender Americans have proudly — if silently — served in our military for years,” Pelosi added in a Twitter reply on Wednesday to both of Trump’s social media accounts.

“But instead of honoring their patriotism, @POTUS has decided to attack their dignity and the very value of their service.”

Pelosi said transgender members of the military should be honored for volunteering to fight for their country and vowed to fight Trump’s policy proposal.

“I promise you: this fight is not over. Hatred will never defeat #pride – both of country & of living your life as your true self,” she said.
