Pelosi Statement on Resignation of Office of Government Ethics Director

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Walter Shaub, the government’s top ethics official, announced his early resignation:

“The departure of Walter Shaub from the Office of Government Ethics deals a serious blow to the integrity of our government.  Director Shaub is an honest, independent public servant who has dedicated his career to safeguarding the American people from government officials who would prioritize private gain over the public good.

“Director Shaub’s resignation is a sad consequence of the Trump Administration’s constant ethical breaches, and comes at a moment of crisis for the democratic process.  In light of the Trump White House’s constant efforts to skirt the law, Democrats will ensure that the nomination of Director Shaub’s successor is subject to the utmost scrutiny to ensure that he or she is of the highest integrity and independence.”
