Pelosi Statement on Congresswoman Niki Tsongas’ Decision to Not Seek Re-Election
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement following the retirement announcement of Congresswoman Niki Tsongas of Massachusetts:
“Congresswoman Niki Tsongas embodies public service and exemplifies smart, strong leadership. When she retires at the end of her term, Congress will lose an inspiring, effective champion for the people of Massachusetts and for families across the nation.
“Growing up in a military family, Congresswoman Tsongas learned the importance of service and sacrifice. As a leading voice on the House Armed Services Committee, Niki has helped defend and protect our nation, and showed courage and moral leadership in fighting to change the way women are treated in the military and confronting the egregious fact of sexual assault. Her vision and leadership have also been vital in expanding health care for millions of Americans through the Affordable Care Act, advancing the rights of LGBT Americans, working toward equal pay for equal work, and fostering a clean energy future that creates jobs and builds a healthier future for our children.
“Ten years ago, Niki became the first woman elected to Congress from her state in a quarter century. We are all grateful for her firm belief that ‘women can’t win if women don’t run’ and for the courage and inspiration she has given countless women to fight for a seat at the table. My colleagues and I wish Niki and her family the very best as she writes the next chapter of her journey.”
