CBS News: Nancy Pelosi blasts House GOP health plan, discusses wiretapping claim
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday blasted House Republicans’ plan to replace Obamacare that they rolled out Monday evening.
“Just when you’ve seen it all, the Republicans go to a more extreme place. This will make millions of people — it’s a question of 10, 15, 20 million people off of having health insurance. It will be the biggest transfer of wealth from low-middle income people to wealthy people in our country,” the California Democrat said in an interview on “CBS This Morning.”
The measure would still include coverage for preexisting conditions and allow children to stay on their parents’ plans until age 26. Pelosi said that in order to cover preexisting conditions, you have to have a pool of people.
“You have to have a pool of people to be insured. They don’t talk about how much it’s going to cost. Preexisting conditions coverage is very, very expensive,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi said that Obamacare is already working and compared its effects to before the healthcare law was implemented.
“Premiums were soaring and you couldn’t even get insurance,” she said. “If you had a preexisting condition, you couldn’t.”
The goal of Obamacare was to do improve benefits, expand coverage and to lower costs, she said, which she said the law has done.
“This is a very, very bad, very bad plan,” she said of the GOP proposal.
Pelosi, who serves as the longest-serving member of the House Intelligence Committee, was also asked about President Trump’s accusation that former President Obama ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower and whether she’s seen any evidence to support that.
“Once again, the president doesn’t know what he’s talking about because first of all, the president cannot do that,” she said. “That isn’t what President Obama did or could do.”
