“When the reported chemical weapons attack in Syria took place, I called upon the Administration for an intelligence briefing on this attack as soon as possible. Democrats continue to call for an immediate, comprehensive intelligence briefing on this attack and the Administration’s Syria strategy.

“This latest chemical weapons attack against the Syrian people was a brutally inhumane war crime that demands a strong, smart and calculated response.  One night of airstrikes is not a substitute for a clear, comprehensive Syria strategy.

“Under the guise of helping community banks, the GOP is chipping away at essential protections that prohibit big banks from gambling with the savings of the American people. The exemption to the Volcker Rule passed by the House today makes it easier for the Trump Administration to pursue a full repeal, and could once again put taxpayers on the hook if Wall Street is left unchecked.

“President Trump’s pardon of Scooter Libby makes clear his contempt for the rule of law.

Leader Pelosi.  Good afternoon everyone. I thanked the organizers of today for not putting me behind John Lewis, I didn’t realize that I would be following Reverend Martin Luther King with one of the greatest speeches of all time.

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced today that she will recommend to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee that Congressman Conor Lamb join the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology. The Caucus will approve the recommendations next week.

Leader Pelosi.  Good morning, everyone.  Welcome back.  As I said, over the break, our country observed the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.  Today in the Capitol, we will have an observance under the leadership of the Speaker, which I am honored to participate in. 

Leader Pelosi.  I thank the gentleman for yielding. It’s interesting to note, Mr. [Steve] Cohen is a Member of the Judiciary Committee. This is a balanced budget amendment and what’s interesting is, it’s not coming by way of the Budget Committee, as you might suspect. It’s coming by way of the Judiciary Committee because it intends to amend the Constitution of the United States. How sad.

Today, Speaker Ryan and House Republicans are forcing a vote on a radical Republican balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that brazenly attacks Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security – abandoning America’s seniors and working families.

“This partisan proposal seals Republicans’ betrayal of rural communities and working families across the nation. House Republicans are hastily moving to devastate the seniors, veterans, individuals with disabilities and vulnerable communities who rely on SNAP to put food on the table. The GOP’s ‘workforce requirements’ are nothing but a cynical Trojan Horse to take away SNAP from millions of hungry families, and push forward new burdensome bureaucracies that fly in the face of evidence-based policy.
