Dear Democratic Colleague,
I am writing to announce the inauguration of a Democratic intern initiative that will provide college-level interns the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the Democratic Cloakroom.
When the House Page Program was discontinued earlier this year, I noted the interest of House Democrats in finding new ways to involve young people in the operations of the House. When we return in October, we will begin offering college-level interns the chance to observe and assist House floor operations in the Cloakroom.
A limited number of students will be selected to work with our professional cloakroom staff. Only interns already chosen to serve in Members’ offices will be considered. As with the former page program, the Democratic Leader will ask Members to recommend an intern who will assist our Cloakroom staff for up to six weeks as part of the intern’s existing Washington internship placement. When the House is not in session, the intern will report to the sponsoring Member’s Office. This initiative affords college-level interns with the opportunity to work in the Cloakroom and on the floor without the cost and complex responsibilities of the page program.
I know these placements will offer a valuable learning experience for the interns while providing valuable assistance to our Members consistent with the needs of the Cloakroom’s staff.
Thank you for your interest in this initiative.
best wishes,
Nancy Pelosi
