Pelosi Statement on April Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 288,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate dropping to 6.3 percent.  With businesses adding 273,000 jobs, this marks the 50th consecutive month of private sector job growth:

“Today’s report shows our economy continues to move forward, with the 50th consecutive month of private sector job growth.  But too many Americans are still waiting to feel the effects of the recovery, and many more were struggling long before the recession hit.

“Congress must do more to create an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.  Unfortunately, Republicans continue to stand in the way.  Men and women in our country working full-time jobs are stuck raising their families in poverty, yet Republicans refuse to raise the minimum wage.  More than 2.6 million Americans have been left without an essential lifeline as they weather the crisis of unemployment, yet Republicans refuse to renew emergency unemployment insurance.

“The Republican approach shows nothing but contempt and disregard for working families.  Their toxic and reckless agenda codified in the Ryan Republican budget hurts families, slows growth, and weakens our economy.  The American people need and deserve better.  Democrats will keep fighting to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, unleash the full potential of America’s women, and reignite the American Dream.”
