Pelosi Statement on CHC’s Principles for Immigration Reform

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Congressional Hispanic Caucus released its principles on immigration reform:

“Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus issued a clarion call to action to ensure all immigrants have the opportunity to realize the American Dream.  The CHC’s principles reflect the longtime Democratic commitment to comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders, upholds the rule of law, protects our workers, unites families, and provides a pathway to citizenship.

“More than two years ago, House Democrats took the first step in the path to reform by passing the DREAM Act to open the doors of legalization to young students and service members.  Despite Republican obstruction in Congress, President Obama gave millions of young people who qualified for the DREAM Act the hope of bringing them closer to the day when they can enjoy the full benefits of citizenship.  Now, working with the President and across the aisle, we must take the next step forward and complete the work of immigration reform.

“Since our nation’s founding, those who have come to our shores yearning to take part in America’s future have brought their hopes, aspirations, and optimism for a better future.  Each generation of immigrants has made America more American.  Today, with the CHC’s leadership, we must build on this tradition, embrace the values of our history, and enact comprehensive immigration reform.”
