Pelosi Statement on Harvey Milk Day

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today commemorating Harvey Milk Day observed on May 22 in the state of California, in honor of slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk:

“Harvey Milk’s courageous, trailblazing leadership stands as one of the great beacons of progress for our country.  San Franciscans are especially proud to ensure that our beloved former Supervisor’s legacy of inclusion and progress endures in our communities.  As Californians and others around the world commemorate Harvey Milk Day, on what would have been his 84th birthday, we remember the greatest gift he gave us: hope.

“Harvey Milk challenged us to ‘hope for a better world, hope for a better tomorrow, and hope that all will be alright.’  And, through his example, Harvey helped equip a generation of LGBT leaders with the tools needed to dismantle discriminatory laws and build a better, more hopeful future for all Americans.  Today, LGBT Americans serve openly at the highest levels of government, protect our nation as members of our Armed Forces, represent our nation as Ambassadors, and contribute to communities as parents, civil leaders, and engaged citizens.

“Each Harvey Milk Day, we recommit ourselves to ushering in a new era of progress.  We honor Harvey Milk’s legacy by striving to create a future where no LGBT American must suffer ‘conversion therapy.’  We strive to create a world where committed same-sex couples have the right to marry wherever they live and hard-working Americans no longer live in fear of being fired because of who they are or who they love.  As we honor this great pioneer of equality and inclusiveness, we continue to draw strength from his leadership in our continued effort to advance equality for all Americans.”
