Pelosi Statement on Passing of Eliezer ‘Elie’ Wiesel
San Francisco – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of Holocaust survivor, writer and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel, who passed away at age 87:
“Elie Wiesel’s moral compass guided people around the world to choose courage in the face of persecution, peace instead of violence, and hope over despair. Today, the world mourns the loss of this towering humanitarian and global human rights champion.
“Through his words, Elie Wiesel gave voice to those lost in one of the bleakest chapters in human history. Through his life, Elie embodied the courage and beauty of the human spirit. Through his legacy, the world remembers that we are all responsible for ending the extremism that too often serves as the foundation of oppression and brutality.
“Elie’s enduring faith in humanity helped create communities committed to peace. Thanks to his visionary leadership and persistence, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum stands as a reminder of our moral responsibility to confront discrimination and hatred in all its forms. May it be a source of comfort to Elie Wiesel’s family and loved ones that so many share in mourning the passing of this great man.”
