Pelosi Statement on Republican Congress Missing Budget Deadline

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Republican Congress failed to enact a budget by today, April 15, as required by law:

“Republicans have missed the statutory deadline for Congress to enact a budget.  Missing the date is not nearly as significant as the reason why: the Republican Leadership proposed the most devastating Ryan ‘Road to Ruin’ budget in history, and even that wasn’t brutal enough for the radical forces that have taken control of the House GOP.

“This budget that would have ended the Medicare guarantee and demanded $6.5 trillion in cuts was too mild for House Republicans.  This is the cruel reality of the Republican Congress today: a Ryan Budget that severe, that destructive to working families doesn’t go far enough to pass in the Republican majority.

“The budget is supposed to be a statement of our values as a nation.  The collapse of the Republican budget proposal is a very serious statement of House Republicans’ unfathomable radicalism and disdain for seniors, students and hard-working families.  Democrats will continue to fight for a budget that does reflect our values as a country – a budget that creates jobs, invests in the future, and grows the paychecks of the American people while reducing the deficit in a responsible way.”
