Pelosi Statement on Senate Vote on Planned Parenthood Funding
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Senate defeated Republicans’ effort to advance a measure to prohibit federal funding of Planned Parenthood. The Republicans’ motion to proceed required 60 votes for passage. The motion failed to pass by a vote of 53-46.
“Tonight’s effort in the Senate is no surprise from Congressional Republicans who have perpetuated a relentless assault on women’s health. Tonight, once again, Republicans attempted to make it dramatically harder for women to access the comprehensive health care they need.
“Planned Parenthood clinics are often one of the few affordable health care options for many women, providing life-saving preventive care for millions of underserved women every year – including essential cervical cancer and breast cancer screenings. One in five American women has relied on a Planned Parenthood health care center for care in her lifetime, with Planned Parenthood serving 2.7 million patients every year.
“Republicans are once again threatening to shut down the entire government to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood and the millions of American women who count on its clinics for comprehensive health care. One of the first acts of the House Republican Majority in 2011 was to drag our nation to the brink of a government shutdown over funding for Planned Parenthood. The House and Senate Republican leadership should abandon this effort and resist rightwing efforts to create another Republican Government Shutdown.”
