Pelosi Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of the Tucson Tragedy

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in remembrance of the fifth anniversary of the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona that claimed the lives of six and injured 13 people, including then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:

“As we mark the fifth anniversary of the tragic shooting in Tucson, let us honor the victims and survivors, including our own Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, with action.  On that bleak day five years ago, gun violence shattered lives in Arizona – and strengthened our resolve to act to confront the crisis of gun violence and save lives.

“When guns claim the lives of more than 30,000 Americans a year, gun violence is unquestionably an epidemic that threatens the safety, life, and liberty of the American people.  Congress has a moral responsibility to act to address the daily tragedy of gun violence in our communities.

“The President’s executive actions represent important progress.  Now Congress must act by passing the bipartisan King-Thompson legislation to strengthen background checks and keep guns out of the wrong hands.  Let us work together with the same courage Gabby exhibits every day of her recovery to help reduce gun violence and create a safer America.”
