Pelosi Statement on Passage of Pipeline Safety Bill

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2845, the Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act of 2011, by a unanimous voice vote.

“Having witnessed the devastation of a pipeline explosion – meeting the victims, touring the destruction, and thanking the first responders – it is all too clear why Congress had to take strong bipartisan action to strengthen pipeline safety standards.

“15 months after the fiery fury of the San Bruno pipeline explosion, the House has passed a bill to  hire additional safety inspectors, increase penalties for violators, require automatic shutoff valves on new or replaced pipeline, and mandate that pipelines in high-consequence areas have the documentation or testing to prove they can safely handle their level of pressure.

“I thank Secretary LaHood for his continued attention to this urgent safety issue and applaud the work of my Bay Area colleague Jackie Speier, who tirelessly fought to strengthen safety protections. May communities around this country never again witness the destruction from leaks and explosion such as in San Bruno, CA, Allentown, PA,  and the Kalamazoo River, MI.”
