Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Department of Defense allocated $36 million in additional funding to Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and $6 million in additional funding to Treasure Island as part of the $54 million national increase in base cleanup funding secured in the fiscal year 2018 omnibus funding bill:

“Since our declarations of freedom were presented, the United States and France have enshrined the values of freedom and respect for human rights into our democracies. In the course of our countries’ history, we have acted upon these values both at home and abroad. In his address to the Congress today, President Macron made an elegant declaration of those values.

“More than 100 years ago, the world witnessed the beginning of one of the greatest acts of barbarism of the 20th Century when the Ottoman Empire began the systematic murder of 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children. The Armenian Genocide remains a dark stain on the history of human civilization and an enduring reminder of the need to acknowledge and confront the past.
