Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Congress sending the fiscal year 2008 Intelligence Authorization Act Conference Report to the President. President Bush has threatened to veto the legislation because it extends the prohibition on torture contained in the Army Field Manual to Intelligence Community personnel.

“We urge you to reconsider your previous opposition to fiscally sound incentives for American renewable energy, and lend your support to this historic legislation in time for this occasion.”

The Wounded Warrior Program was established at the direction of Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer and Chairman Brady with the goal of employing as many as 50 veterans to work with Members of Congress, Committee and Leadership offices, and in support services.

“The statement from the Pentagon today on troop levels in Iraq is an admission that the President’s troop surge was not a temporary measure. There will be more U.S. troops in Iraq this summer than there were at the end of 2006, when the American people demanded a New Direction in Iraq. “

“The House and Senate met again today to produce a strong new FISA bill and once again, Republicans and the White House refused to come to the negotiating table.”

“With the price of oil above $100 a barrel, this Congress is again taking action to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and support the domestic production of renewable energy.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on Army Chief of Staff General George Casey’s comments to reporters yesterday that the stress of repeated Iraq deployments is affecting the quality of Army recruits, midlevel officer retention, and other factors that are critical for Army readiness.

“One year after the Walter Reed scandal, America’s returning heroes are receiving better and more efficient care, but many are still waiting too long and facing too many bureaucratic roadblocks as they try to recover from the wounds of war.”

“The resignation of Fidel Castro is a reason to hope that freedom is closer than it was when he was the public face of an oppressive regime, but is not a guarantee of a democratic future for the people of Cuba.”

“The Protect America Act will expire only because the President and congressional Republicans refused to approve an extension of that law. Their true concern here is not national security. Rather, they want to protect the financial interests of telecommunications companies and avoid judicial scrutiny of their warrantless wiretapping program.”
